Diabetes Cure Herbals, Remedies That Work

Diabetes cure herbals are natural herbs have been used for centuries. New research shows that some of them have real benefit for diabetics. Here are the best known ones, how they work and where to find them.

These seeds, leaves, juices, and minerals have been used, some for thousands of years, to aid in the treatment of diabetes.

The ones included here are only a few taken from a long list of herbal remedies that have been used by diabetics long before modern medicine.

These were chosen because they have been tested and analyzed. In research labs and human control groups they have shown some proof that they help.

What Makes Them Effective

After modern medicine discarded diabetes cure herbals as myths, the discovery of flavonoids and other antioxidants made scientists take a second look at those old remedies.

It helps to know what antioxidant and flavenoids are, since those words show up often when you look at diabetes cure herbals and superfoods.

Antioxidants are found in all fruits and vegetables, spices and herbs. They protect against cell damage by their reaction to oxidation (what scientists think causes aging).

Flavonoids are a kind of antioxidant that is actually a plant pigment. Over 6,000 different flavonoids have been discovered so far.

They give the yellow, orange, green and red color to vegetables and fruits. The intensity of color means there are more antioxidant effects.

But there is more to flavonoids than just antioxidants. They help your body use vitamin C to heal and fight viruses.

They also lower inflammation, and they are natural antibiotics, slowing down bacteria.

Why Raw Is Better

The effect of flavonoids is cut down as much as half by the heat of cooking and processing. You can see it happen. After cooking spinach, drain off the water and watch the green pigment go down the drain.

If you cook at lower temperatures and do not overcook them, vegetables will keep some flavonoid effect.

Another thing to think about while you prepare vegetables is this. Flavonoids are the colorful parts of vegetables and fruits, which is usually the skin and the parts closest to it.

One exception is oranges. In an orange the flavonoids are found in the white pulp under the skin and the white skin around each section of the orange.

You have probably heard that eating an orange is much better for a diabetic than drinking orange juice because of the lack of fiber. Flavonoids add another powerful reason.

Here are some things you need to understand before you look for supplements to help with diabetes.

Pterocarpus Marsupium

We begin the list of best diabetes cure herbals with this ancient herb.

The Tree of India has been used in Hindu medicine throughout their history, and modern science has found a reason. Pterocarpus has a flavonoid in it called epicatechin.

This is why it gets to be first on the list: the flavonoid regenerates pancreatic beta cells in the lab. It is the only natural substance that does that as far as we know.

No medication can do this. Remember, the beta cells are the manufacturers of insulin in the pancreas. If an herb can make them grow again, the damage of diabetes is reversed.

Epicatechin is not available right now in a proven useful form, but scientists are trying to figure out how it works. It holds out hope for the natural reversal of diabetes.

The only place to find this herb will be a health food store, and you take your chances there because so many supplements are not what they claim to be.

Bitter Melon

Bitter melon or balsam pear is used as fresh juice or extract of the unripe fruit at 3-6 tablespoons per day, or 50-60 ml. It belongs in diabetes cure herbals because its active flavonoid, charantin, lowers blood sugar.

It also has polypeptide-P, called "plant insulin," that researchers found acted like insulin when it was injected under the skin.

But be careful using bitter melon. It causes abdominal pain and diarrhea at larger doses than those recommended for oral use.

Watch your blood sugar carefully. Diabetic shock is the result of low blood sugar from too much insulin. Let your doctor know if you are going to try bitter melon.

Gymnema Sylvestre

I read about this herb when I first became diabetic and bought some. It did not help.

The Hindu name means "sugar destroyer," and research shows it helps lower blood sugar and decreases the craving for sweets. At 200-250 mg a day, it does help your pancreas produce insulin.

So why did it not work for me? The trouble with using diabetes cure herbals like gymnema is that you have to take the word of a supplement company.

There are no medical regulations they have to follow so there is no way to know what you are getting.

The leaf of gymnema that has been proven to work in clinical trials may not even be present in your supplement.

Other parts of the plant are useless but can still be listed as ingredients. This explains why many of us who take this herb get no results.

Onions and Garlic

APDS, allicin and flavonoids are the substances that have been tested in these two diabetes cure herbals. Allicin and APDS given to fasting people at 125 mg/kg caused their blood glucose to fall and insulin to increase.

It proves that they work for diabetics. But that is not all garlic and onions do for you.

Besides the diabetes cure herbals effect, they also lower lipid levels (cholesterol), have an antihypertensive effect (lower high blood pressure), and keep platelets from clumping which improves cardiovascular disease.

These effects happen over time, but when you eat onion and garlic at least you know you are getting what you asked for. By the way, if you worry about bad breath, eat some yogurt. It helps.

Fenugreek

Fenugreek seeds are used in Indian cooking, but they are also found in the herbal supplement section of pharmacies and in health food stores. You can take them at 5-30 mg with meals.

They are very high in fiber, which helps lower blood sugar and increase your insulin sensitivity.

Fiber supplements can reduce insulin resistance. Among the diabetes cure herbals, fiber appears to be fenugreek's only claim to fame.

Blueberry Leaves

A tea made from the leaves of blueberry plants is weaker than insulin but has the same effect, helping your body use blood sugar, which means better blood sugar readings.

It also increases capillary strength, which means it protects against retinopathy in the tiny blood vessels of your eyes, and lowers your risk for cardiovascular problems.
